A really nice early autumn day on Cullaun Lake last sunday; billowing cumulus clouds, a fine breeze, not too much wind, but enough for some fast dinghy racing. It wasn't cold either.
Tomas and myself were on OOD duty, we set a 3 x triangle course with a beat to finish. The wind direction was pretty stable so there was no need to alter the course between races.
Race 1
There were 10 boats on the lake. 3 x wayfarers, 3 x GP14s, 1 x Enterprise, 2 x Omegas, and  Brendan McGlynn in his single hander. The fleet got off to a good start and Chris Caher and his crew Andrew got out in front and basically stayed in front for the rest of the Race 1; Margaret and Sean did their best to catch Chris and Andrew, however, they weren't quite able to close the gap and line honours went to Chris and Andrew. Well done!
Further down the fleet a battle was raging between Billy and Lelia in the GP14, Des and Ruth in another GP14 followed by Kevin and Martin in the Enterprise. Billy did well and apart from narrowly missing hitting the committee boat he took third place followed by Des and Ruth and then Kevin and Martin. Jim and Grace in the wayfarer came in ahead of George and Frank in the GP14. A good first race and well done to all.
Race 2
There was some minor confusion in the timing sequence before the start, anyway it sorted itself out and there was a great start with Chris getting out ahead of Margaret with Des in hot pursuit. Margaret and Des both managed to set spinnakers and this made a significant difference particularly to Margaret. With each successive lap Margaret and Sean were closing the gap between themselves and Chris and Andrew. At the final leeward mark there was nothing in it; Margaret chose the middle of the lake, while Chris favoured a port side course. Margaret got some good lifts and then she had the advantage of approaching the finish line on starboard - it was just enough to pip Chris and take line honours well done Margaret and Sean. The rest of the fleet were a little spread out compared to Race 1. Billy and Lelia were 3rd and Jim and Grace were 4th followed by Kevin and Martin in the enterprise. George and Frank along with Des and Ruth finished the race.
It was a great day on the water and lets hope that "Storm Lorenzo" has either fizzled out or headed in a different direction by the time the hooter blows next sunday!
