Cullaun Sailing Club, Kilkishen, Co.Clarewere at a well-attended reception in Galway last Monday 8th June to promote a new sailing initiative, TrySailing. As part of Irish Water Safety Week TrySailing aims to encourage people to get out on the water.  The Reception was hosted by Irish Sailing Association local director Pierce Purcell. Cullaun Sailing Club, Kilkishen, Co.Clare was represented by Commodore Jim O Sullivan.

TrySailing is a national network of events and opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to get out on the water and give sailing a try. TrySailing is available in all Irish Sailing Association affiliated clubs and approved Training Centres, an extensive network of which Cullaun Sailing Club is a member. (www.sailing.ie)

Mr David Lovegrove, ISA President, was delighted with the response at last week’s event which brought all water sport interests together, with sailing clubs and training centres from the western region as well as rowing, kayaking, diving, windsurfing, sea scouting and boat building and representative stakeholders

The Gardaí, Coast Guard from Shannon and Connemara, Michael Raftery, Galway Chief Fire Officer, Western Fisheries Officers Paul Reynolds and Lonan O’Farrell and Mike Swan, RNLI, also attended, as well as John Killeen, Chairman Marine Institute, and Harbour Master Brian Sheridan.

John Leech, Irish Water Safety CEO, thanked those in attendance and asked the public to take extra care when using the water. 

Pierce Purcell wished Water Safety Awareness Week every success and appealed to boat users to take time out to check their lifejackets, particularly the automatic type which need checking constantly.

Cullaun Sailing Club kids club summer sailing courses are starting on June 29th and July 13th.
